EYFS Curriculum

Our Nursery and Reception class follow a vocabulary rich curriculum. Our beautiful Nursery curriculum has a wealth of exciting learning areas and a vibrant daily routine to commence the children's learning journey. Each pupil in Nursery has an allocated key worker to care and support and build relationships with families which continues into Reception.

Ten projects form the framework for our Reception year experience and these are selected to reflect pupil interest and to develop knowledge and understanding of the world around them. Progression in the areas is mapped across the year to help pupils build knowledge and skills in readiness for Key Stage 1.

Phonics is introduced from week one and delivered daily to all pupils using the Little Wandle programme. A book rich environment and access to high quality texts support early reading and pupils access own reading material exploring the phonics learnt. Parental sessions to share and support reading development at home are held each term and weekly phonics is sent home for consolidation.

Maths is structured using the NCETM resources but also many mathematical activities are carefully planned into the provision to apply skills. Pupils have free access to a variety of maths tools to measure, classify and number, with opportunities for Mastering number.

For many areas of learning pupils follow a personalised experience and progress is shared through the Tapestry platform. Learning and goals are shared regularly with parents, and parents are given many opportunities to support learning from the home environment.

The environment is considered to be the 'third teacher' and we, including the children, take pride in our educational spaces. The environment is carefully planned to reflect and extend previous learning, adhere to children's interests and to provide a broad cultural capital for our pupils. Our open-ended resources are carefully planned for and are staggered in their introductions. We begin the year with minimal, yet high-quality, resources, and support the children to develop skills, passion and purposeful play opportunities with them. As the year progresses and the skills and awe are ignited, more resources are introduced to the classroom, ensuring that previous skills are built upon and revisited.

Each day consists of adult input as a class followed by small group adult supported sessions and child-initiated learning that is labelled 'playful learning'. The staff closely monitor well-being and involvement, to ensure that all of our children are accessing optimal learning during the day.

The staff are responsible for supporting the development of the whole child - no one gets left behind. Each child has a tailored education to extend and challenge them whilst building resilience and communication strategies. They are given real-life experiences and have the freedom to develop as individuals.
